Te Rā Nui is the visionary programme, making this an even stronger community for the people of Porirua. So what are we working on over the next 12 months?
We’re continuing to upgrade infrastructure and do the necessary work to enable more housing in eastern Porirua. This includes completing:
-
- civils and infrastructure work on the Esk development site
- over 3km of wastewater pipes through Bothamley Park
- 4 new homes on Mexted Crescent in Rānui
Once completed, we will be providing land from the Esk development site for purchase, at market rates, to Te Rūnanga Toa Rangatira. They will lease the land to Central Pacific Collective to support Our Whare Our Fale, an innovative home ownership project for Pasefika Community/Pacific Peoples.
But that’s not all! To better support our taiao (our environment) and the people of Porirua, Te Rā Nui will also be looking to start work on:
-
- building 16 new homes for social housing, with construction starting on the first seven homes this month (August)
- making significant upgrades to an additional 25 current state homes
- building a new, additional reservoir (water storage tank) to ensure current and future residents continue to have access to clean drinking water, even during a natural disaster
- upgrading stormwater and wastewater pipes through Cannons Creek Park to Warspite Avenue
- ways we could potentially upgrade three sports fields to reduce the effects of flooding on them
- converting the bottom field (northern end) into a wetland to improve water quality downstream and;
- creating new, additional recreational spaces around the sports fields in Cannons Creek Park.
It’s also important to note that Kāinga Ora (one of three Te Rā Nui partners) is currently assessing any future social housing development not already under contract. A number of projects will proceed as we confirm priority locations and renewal budget, and optimise construction methodology to ensure best value for money. That doesn’t mean work is going to stop in eastern Porirua, as the team are focused on laying the foundation for more housing, and starting construction on work already contracted.
As decisions are made in the coming months, we will keep both yourself and the wider community informed. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the team:
