Over 100 new state homes have already been delivered, and 80 more are currently under construction across Eastern Porirua. The first two of those are already complete and ready to move into, with the balance to be handed over to whānau in the coming months. This adds to the 114 new homes already built through Te Rā Nui.
Te Rā Nui – Eastern Porirua Development is a partnership between Kāinga Ora, Porirua City Council and Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira. The project is replacing older homes that are nearing the end of their life, helping to improve the area.
First new homes now finished
The two recently completed homes on Cornwall Crescent we built to replace one older home that used to be on the site and will soon be home to families in need.
Another 77 new state homes are being built currently. They replace 33 older homes, meaning more than twice as many warm, modern homes will be available for local whānau. The new homes range from one to five bedrooms.
Te Rā Nui Project Director Rachelle Raw says many of the old homes were built 60–70 years ago.
“The new homes we’re building will give our tenants warm, dry and healthy places to live that better suit their needs, now and into the future.”
Upgrades to older homes continue
As well as building new homes, Te Rā Nui is also upgrading older state homes that will stay in the area. So far, 118 homes have been fully upgraded, with another 13 underway.
These upgrades include insulation, double glazing, ventilation, heating, and new kitchens and bathrooms. The work helps these homes last another 50 years.
Rachelle Raw says tenants notice the improvements straight away, especially in winter.
“Our retrofitted homes are cheaper to heat and much easier to keep warm, and that has clear flow‑on benefits for people’s health and overall wellbeing.”
