Planning and consenting work is underway for the construction of around 150 new homes in Cannons Creek, with homes for the private market as well as state housing.
Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities is looking at creating this new development within the boundaries of Castor Crescent and Calliope Crescent (which includes Esk Place, Hazard Grove, and Remus, Juno, Apollo and Ajax lanes). This will also involve redevelopment of Kāinga Ora’s existing land in this area and reconfiguration of some of the existing roading within the site.
Kāinga Ora’s proposal involves building of 64 new warm, dry state homes, with a mixture of one, two, three, four and five bedroom homes and the creation of 42 affordable or market homes.
Porirua Development Project Director Will Pennington says it’s exciting to be announcing the first large mixed-use housing project for eastern Porirua.
“It’s proposed that these would be a mix of smaller apartment and duplex-type homes, as well as larger family homes,” he says.
In order to make way for the new homes, 55 of Kāinga Ora’s old state houses will need to be demolished. “These homes are past their best and not well suited to the needs of families and modern living. We’ll be replacing them with new warm, dry energy efficient homes that are fully insulated, with double glazing, carpets and curtains, and these will be built to a higher specification than is required under NZ building standards.”
Mr Pennington says we will be working to keep tenants, residents and communities informed about progress and to ensure that the impact of the building work will be managed.
“We are aware that a number of private residences are situated within this area and will work with those affected to ensure disruption is minimised,” he says.
The end result will be modern homes, reconfigured roads and better amenities, including a pocket park. Landscaping will include specimen trees and native plants in keeping with the local environment.
These new homes are the latest to be announced as part of the second stage of work in the area, and follow an announcement of 18 new state homes to be built in Niger Street.
“Kāinga Ora tenancy liaison officers have been working closely with affected tenants over the past few months to inform them about the development and keep them updated as things progress,” says Mr Pennington.
