New Castor Crescent homes scoop award at the 2021 NZIA Wellington architecture awards

2021 03 16 MT 00280

We are very proud to have our recently completed development at Castor Crescent recognised for outstanding design, with a top award for multi-unit housing at the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Wellington Awards.  The awards jury described the projects as having reaffirmed “that well-considered architecture can be achieved and enjoyed by all, not just those who can afford it.”

The Castor Crescent development was described as a colourful mix of 53 one-five bedroom homes which sees the benefit of medium-density development in helping create better homes for our customers, and a strong sense of community.

This development was championed by the community and the late Reverend Perema Leasi who was a leading advocate for more warm, quality social housing for the community in Cannons Creek, saying “If people have a comfortable warm house they will be happier.”

One of our tenants, Toni, who moved into one of the first homes at Castor Crescent with her two children talks about how proud they were to live there, and the sense of community they all feel with the new homes.

For families like Toni’s, these new homes are making a huge difference not only to their health but also the wellbeing of their whānau. “Everything about life here is better, there is a real community feel, my kids can run free and we are just generally healthy. The homes are so warm and quiet. It’s a major improvement.”

This is an on-going priority for Kāinga Ora - to continue to develop and deliver more quality homes in eastern Porirua.

Watch our video to hear from Toni herself about how she is finding her new home.
